여러 해 여러 해 전
바닷가 어느 왕국에
애너벨 리라는 이름의
한 소녀가 살았었다--
이 소녀는 날 사랑하고 내게서 사랑받는다는 것 외로
딴 생각은 없이 살았었다.
나는 어렸었고 그녀도 어렸었다,
바닷가 이 왕국에서.
그러나 우리는 사랑 이상의 사랑으로 사랑했었다,
나와 나의 애너벨 리는--
천국의 날개돋친 천사들도
시새우는 사랑으로.
이것이 이유였다, 그래서 오랜 전
바닷가 이 왕국에
구름에서 바람이 불어나와
나의 애너벨 리를 싸늘히 얼리고,
그녀의 천사 친척들이 와서
그녀를 내게서 빼앗아 가
바닷가 이 왕국의
무덤 속에 가둬 버렸다.
왕국에서 우리의 반도 행복지 못한 천사들이
그녀와 나를 시새운 것이다--
그렇다--그것이 이유였다(바닷가 이 왕국에서
모두가 알고 있듯이)
그래서 밤에 구름에서 바람이 불어나와,
나의 애너벨 리를 싸늘하게 죽게 한 것이다.
그러나 우리의 사랑 그것은 훨씬 굳세었다.
우리보다 나이 들은 이들의 사랑보다도--
우리보다 현명한 이들의 사랑보다도--
그리고 위로는 천국의 천사들도
밑으로는 바다의 악마들도
내 영혼을 아름다운 애너벨 리의 영혼에서
결코 갈라놓을 수는 없었다.
그러기에 달 비칠 땐 언제나 내게
아름다운 애너벨 리의 생각이 떠오르고
별 솟으면 언제나 나는
아름다운 애너벨 리의 빛나는 눈을 느낀다.
그래서 밤새도록, 나는 여기 누웠노라,
바닷가 무덤 속 거기
철석이는 바닷가 무덤 속 거기 있는
내 사랑, 내 사랑, 내 생명, 내 신부 곁에.
